Coach Probyn Athletic Achievement Scholarship
For 50 seasons, Coach Mike Probyn was a fixture on the sidelines of Nordhoff Rangers basketball.
A 1968 Nordhoff graduate, Mike was a member of the school’s 1967 CIF Championship boys basketball team and received the team’s Most Improved Player Award—an award that has since been renamed The Mike Probyn Most Improved Player Award in his honor.
After graduation, Mike attended Ventura College and continued playing basketball. In 1969, his education was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. He returned to the Ojai Valley in 1971.
In 1975, Mike returned to Nordhoff as JV basketball coach under Hall of Fame Coach Dick Sebek. He went on to coach JV for 27 seasons, serve as head coach for 10 seasons, and coach the freshman team for another 13 seasons before retiring in 2025.
Known for his emphasis on defense, teamwork, character, and humor, Coach Probyn has influenced generations of Nordhoff student-athletes.
Continuing Coach Probyn’s Legacy
Because his own college education was interrupted by military service, Coach Probyn wants to help a graduating Nordhoff basketball player pursue the educational opportunity he was unable to complete.
The Mike Probyn Scholarship provides financial assistance to a graduating senior who has demonstrated dedication to the basketball program, academic achievement, leadership, and strong character.
